About Fan of the Sport
Fan of the Sport officially opened its doors Oct 15, 2011. In the beginning the store only carried sports novelty. Due to customer demand our inventory grew to include gaming products, Magic the Gathering, Pokémon, War Hammer/4K, and board games. The store now carries a wide variety of sports novelty, caps, gaming products, and pop social collectibles including comics. The demands of the store prompted relocation in 2013 to 571 Talbot St. The main floor is full of great products and we boast an upstairs gaming room that comfortably holds 32 players. The downstairs holds another game room where we have 5 War Hammer/4K tables with tons of terrain players can use anytime. There are also lockers to store your own gaming armies. The store has also become a regular vendor at local hockey tournaments and Comic Con’s in the past 2 years.
Fan of the Sport is owned and operated by Marty Hancox. Fan of the Sport is partnered with Youth Employment Services, bringing in teens/youths for job experience and work skills. Marty Hancox owner of Fan of the Sport. Following graduation from East Elgin High School in Aylmer, Marty attended Lambton College taking Marketing. Marty worked summers at Coyle and Greer Awards and then accepted a fulltime supervisory position. During the 5 years Marty was employed at Coyle and Greer Awards he attended night classes and achieved an Industrial Management Diploma. After moving to ST. Thomas, Marty was hired at GKN Sinter Metals where he was employed for 12 years. As he did in his prior job Marty was very active with the workplace social club. After getting a scare during the automotive collapse in 2008/09, where many good automotive companies in ST. Thomas closed operations or left the area, Marty started to think of other employment. Marty had always dream of owning his own business one day and began to put his plan in motion by renting a small space where he ran Fan of the Sport by day and worked at GKN SInter Metals at night. After for a few months and getting totally drained, Marty decided to jump in with both feet.
Marty enjoys most sports both watching and playing. His favorite sports teams are Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Redskins. Marty enjoys playing board games and Magic the Gathering. During his downtime Marty enjoys spending time with loved ones, watching tv/movies, working out and day trips/traveling.
Marty grew up in Springfield a small rural town. Marty spent much of the time on his Grandfather’s farm where he learned the value of hard work in a family oriented business. Marty believes any life goal is doable with hard work and dedication, if you have a goal go for it or you may regret not chasing your dream.
